English Debating Club
What are the ideal attributes of a 21st-century student?
In this digital age, critical thinking, creativity and effective communication skills are highly valued by society.
The English Debating Team aims to expose students to these skills and give them the opportunity to test their mettle in the heat of battle.
Since the introduction of English Debating Team in 2011, we have experimented with a variety of debating formats from traditional inter-school debating competitions to mock trials. The current focus for 2015-16 will be mock trials.
In the past two years, we participated in the Hong Kong Inter-school Mock Trial Competition, which brought together students from around twenty elite schools in Hong Kong. These students assumed the roles of barristers and witnesses and spent an intensive weekend in April at the University of Hong Kong having their cases heard by a panel of practising judges.
Over the past two years, four of our students were placed in the top six of a pool of one hundred and twenty competitors.
The judges provided each student with comprehensive oral and written feedback on their performances.
Training and guidance was given at school to students before the competition and a weekend workshop was run by Arch Education to assist the students in their preparation.
